Consignment

Consignment Terms

OAR prides itself on offering the best gear at the best prices. We strive to price your gear relative to what the market will bear. We want you to get the most for your new and used gear, and balance that with what the customer will pay.  We have a sliding scale of consignment percentages based on the sale price.

How It Works
You (the consignor) bring in your gear and together we agree on a selling price.   Consignors have the option of receiving cash once the item has sold or selling the item directly to the store and receiving their cash immediately.  When your gear sells, you receive 60% percent of the selling price.

Immediate cash-for-item is in the amount of 35% of selling price.

Store Policies

Items are placed on consignment for a minimum of 30 days.  After 90 days, OAR will ask the consignor to retrieve unsold items. If the consignor fails to respond to OAR's request to retrieve unsold items, then the consigned items shall become property of OAR.  Apparel, boots and shoes that remain unsold may be donated by OAR to Goodwill or a similar organization.

Selling price is initially determined by OAR with input from the consignor.  Items placed on consignment will be tagged to be discounted by 10% during the second calendar month of consignment, and an additional 10% in the third calendar month.

At the beginning of each month, OAR will send a check to the consignor for all items sold in the previous month for those items sold for cash. We strive to mail all consignment checks by the 10th of the month. Consignors selling items for store credit will receive that credit upon each item selling.  No notification will be sent to the consignor for items sold for store credit. Please stop by the store or call for your credit balance.

Tips For Selling Your Gear With Us
Clleanliness = Sale-ability. Washing a Fleece jacket or sleeping bag before consigning will not only make your item more appealing, but it'll keep our shop smelling fresher as well. Wiping the mud from the frame of your bicycle will help you too.
  • Flexibility. If you are thinking you can get close to retail for your item, remember, friends don't let friends pay retail.  We want you to get the most for your gear and will price accordingly. In general, our pricing is loosely based on wholesale pricing, while considering original value, current condition and natural technological advances in currently available gear.
  • Patience. You brought your gear to us on Wednesday at 2pm. Calling us noon on Thursday to see if it has sold will make us grumpy.
  • Seasonality. Selling your full suspension bike in the middle of January may not get you the best deal or move it quickly. We will accept off season items but it is best to bring in items that are season appropriate.
  • Trust. Some level of trust in our expertise will make this a smoother, creamier experience for all concerned. We know you loved your gear when you were using it but believe us when we say it'll sell for "x" price.
  • Please include batteries for any gear that requires batteries to operate (batteries stay with the item).  Shoes and boots should have laces.  Zippers should all zip properly.  All parts and pieces should be included with your gear, and all clothing should have no rips, tears or major stains.
We love what we do. We want people to enjoy the outdoors and hope we can put the right gear into their hands to do so. If your stuff works for them, we'll recommend it.  We try to price things appropriately first, then sell to the appropriate person. Sounds simple right? It isn't rocket science, but it is close.

What kinds of outdoor gear and clothing is OAR accepting on consignment?  The kind related to almost any activity that folks love to do when they head outside.  That includes any gear and clothing appropriate for camping, hiking, back packing, trail and road running, hunting (no firearms for now but will accept bows, and bow/firearm accessories), fishing, kayaking, downhill and cross country skiing, snow shoeing, canoeing, road and mountain biking, rapelling and rock climbing (but no hardware or ropes), bird watching, orienteering and whatever else you like to do outdoors.  We will also accept technical clothing and footwear related to indoor activities (for those who love their treadmills, spin bikes and ellipticals!).  Items should all be in very good to excellent condition.

OAR will also accept gently used topo maps, books, activity-specific training videos and other videos related to the outdoors.  If you are not sure about the gear you have please call or drop by and we'll take a look!

*A Note on negotiating. We don't. Someone wants to offer $200 less for your Road bike? We simply tell them No. We know it sounds harsh but we strive to get a fair price for you (the consigner) and them (the buyer) right from the start.
